Unit 1: Whole Numbers, Place Value and Rounding
In 4th grade, children must understand how to represent the value of the digit in whole numbers through 1,000,000,000 and decimals to the hundredths using expanded notation and numerals. Fourth grade students interpret the value of each position as 10 times the position to the right and as one-tenth the value of the place to its left. They must also compare and order whole numbers to 1 billion and decimals to the hundredths using symbols (>, <, =) and concrete & visual models. In addition, 4th graders have to be able to round whole numbers and determine decimals on a number line to the hundredths place.

Unit 2: Multiplication and Division
In 4th grade students must use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. This includes understanding that a multiplicative comparison is a situation which one quantity is multiplied by a specified number to get another quantity. They will solve multi-step word problems, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. This year students will learn how to multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one digit number and multiply two two-digit numbers. They will begin to work with factors and multiples for whole numbers in the range of 1-100 and determine whether a given whole number is prime or composite. In 4th grade students will also be able to find whole number quotients and remainders with up to four digit dividends and one digit divisor.
